Joint efforts for risk prevention and cross-border coordination in disaster

Interreg VI-A IPA Hungary-Serbia Programme
JERICO aims is to bolster resilience to climate change through collaborative efforts, enhancing risk prevention and disaster management across the HU-SRB border by upgrading the capabilities of volunteer firefighting units for swift action in climate-related emergencies by fortifying infrastructure and collaboration tools; to enhance the knowledge of the general public about disaster preparedness and response strategies and to ensure the availability of new generations of voluntary firefighters.

Impact Pathway

The area faces the following primary challenges: outdated disaster management infrastructure, particularly in the area of Mórahalom and Horgoš; lack of adequately trained volunteer firefighters; the growing need for a better prepared population and the absence of an effective framework for international cooperation between Hungarian and Serbian voluntary disaster management services. These issues compromise the ability to respond effectively to climate-related and anthropogenic emergencies. To address these challenges, we have planned several key actions. Designs for upgrading the disaster management infrastructure are ready, in case of Horgoš and Mórahalom the building licences have been issued. Focusing on renovating and extending (Horgoš) or establishing (Mórahalom) long awaited fire stations to enhance regional and cross-border response capabilities. This will be coupled with the purchase of equipment for voluntary units in several localities, and the preparations for building the appropriate storage facilities are also under way. Extended training programs for volunteer fire fighters are being planned to be carried out to improve their number, skills and preparedness. In the project broad preventive training programs and events are planned for the population to increase community awareness and emergency preparedness.

What Can Be Reused from This Project (capitalisation filter – expected potential)
